ABOUT COCHRANE MARTIAL ARTS AND FITNESS
The Mission
Statement of the Cochrane Martial Arts Centre is “to facilitate
a Safe, Peaceful and Open environment where Instructors of all
disciplines and Students of all ages and abilities may gather to
pursue their devotion to the Martial Arts in a Respectful and
Dynamic atmosphere of Learning”.
Our club is family oriented and we make every effort to provide
a welcoming, relaxed and fun learning atmosphere. The benefits
of taking group martial arts classes are numerous as they
encourage attendance and commitment through a shared community
of support and goal setting (knowledge and fitness). Martial
arts practice encompasses many aspects of health and wellness
both physical and mental:
- Cardiovascular conditioning
- Flexibility and balance
- Coordination (both hand/eye and left/right)
- Muscle conditioning
- Improved core strength and postural alignment
- Stamina
- Weight Loss (some of the more intense classes can burn up to
800 calories an hour!)
- Stress reduction and relaxation (because of the emphasis on
deep breathing)
- Develop quicker physical and mental reflexes
- Build confidence and boost self-esteem
- Teach leadership skills, develop self-discipline and respect
for oneself and others
- Provides the peace of mind that comes with learning and
training to defend yourself
Our classes meet the demands of the experienced and fit as well
as complete beginners and those just starting on their journey
towards a healthier lifestyle. All our classes will push you
consistently to new limits but students are free to progress at
their own pace while always being encouraged and supported to
improve their individual performance.
The philosophy of the Cochrane Martial Arts Centre embraces
technical perfection and realistic self-defence skills rather
than tournament accolades. We feel it is crucial that students
can practice skill development in a safe environment and
therefore the martial arts training in our school is highly
controlled. Violence and aggression are not acceptable at the
Cochrane Martial Arts Centre and we are completely committed to
the safety and well-being of our students. While we feel
sparring is an important component of learning the martial arts
(for teaching timing, distancing, spatial awareness, etc.) we
also have numerous classes to choose from that do not include
any sparring (*) and you are encouraged to choose a class that
fits with your goals and comfort level.
All our classes are conducted by fully qualified martial arts
instructors and instruction is based on solid martial arts
principles as opposed to purely aerobic qualifications. For
example, if you choose to attend the “no contact” cardio
kickboxing class, you will still be taught by a qualified and
experienced martial arts instructor who will introduce you to
the correct techniques and qualities of moving, punching,
blocking and kicking.
Whatever your goals are, the Cochrane Martial Arts Centre is
committed to helping you achieve them and we welcome any
inquiries you may have.
